Using this Tutorial

Getting Started with Wordstock is composed of 14 chapters. Once you've mastered the material in a chapter, move on to the following chapter. If you've used a computer in the past, you may find that you are already familiar with the material in the early chapters. If that's the case, treat each chapter as an individual tutorial. You may use this manual as a reference guide as your familiarity with WordStock increases.

Please Note
Each chapter contains 3 sections:

1. The chapter heading and summary identify the chapter's contents.

2. A section called 'In Your Store' describes when the chapter material is most frequently used.

3. Detailed instructions for applying material in the chapter to everyday retail store tasks.

Getting Started with WordStock concludes with eight APPENDICES, and a Glossary.

About the Format

References to menu items are enclosed in 'single quotation marks'. If you would like detailed information about a menu item, please refer to the Appendix.

Screen field labels are enclosed in "double quotation marks". If you would like detailed information about a screen field, please refer to the Appendix.

Conventions in WordStock

Key strokes

Whenever you are required to use the keyboard, you will be instructed to press a key, or type a series of keys. Keys are highlighted and enclosed in <brackets>. The brackets serve as indicators only and should not be typed.

Key combinations

You are instructed to hold down one key and press another whenever you must simultaneously press multiple keys to execute a command.

Function Keys (F-keys)

  • There are 12 keys running horizontally across the top of your keyboard. They are numbered F1-F12.
  • These keys, when pressed alone or in combination with the Shift key, perform some of WordStock's basic functions.
  • Please see the Appendix for a detailed explanation of all of the WordStock function keys.
  • An explanation of the F-key functions that are standard throughout WordStock is included in the Chapter 2 Menus and Screens.
  • Descriptions of screen-specific F-key functions appear where relevant.

Help

There are two ways to get help in WordStock:

WORDSTOCK'S HELP SYSTEM can be used when you want help but are unsure how to proceed. WordStock Help provides information about how to access a Help screen in any of WordStock's menus. (See Chapter 2 for details and instructions).

A COMMAND HELP MENU is available whenever you are working in a program in WordStock. Each Command Help Menu contains a list of available procedures.

(See Chapter 2 for details and instructions).

Windows

Whenever you are working in WordStock at your computer; WordStock 4 provides access to up to three windows so that you can work on up to three tasks at one time. With multiple windows, it is not necessary to finish a task or quit out of a screen in order to work on another task or to view another screen. (See Chapter 4 for details and instructions).

Switching windows in WordStock is like changing the channels on a television: the program you were watching before you changed the channel is still running, its just not displayed on your screen.

When you're working at a terminal, you can access only one window at a time.

Please Note
WordStock windows should not be confused with MicroSoft Windows.

Entering discounts

Whenever you're required to enter a discount percentage, it must be expressed as a 4-digit number. For example, 40% is expressed '40.00' (it is not necessary to include the decimal point).

Entering dates

Whenever you are required to enter a date, it must be expressed as a 6-digit number. For example, 1/1/97 is expressed '01/01/97' (It is not necessary to include the slashes except in Canada and Great Britain).
