WordStock uses one of three methods to abbreviate entries into the system.
- No abbreviation
- The WordStock abbreviation system
- The BISAC subset abbreviation system
Regardless of the abbreviation method used by your particular system, the following rules apply:
Titles
The articles 'a', 'an', and 'the' are dropped from the beginning of a title. If you wish to enter a title beginning with the letter 'A' (A is for Apple, for example), you must either:
- Include an apostrophe before and/or after the 'A' (<'A is for Apple>, <A' is for Apple>, <'A' is for Apple>).
- Join the 'A' with the word immediately following it (<Ais for Apple>.
- Type an extra 'A' in front of the title (<A A is for Apple>) so that when the abbreviation system removes the first 'A', the second 'A' remains in the title.
Please Note
If you type an extra 'A' when entering a title, you must type the extra 'A' whenever you want to access the item's record by entering the title in the "Title" field. |
All punctuation is dropped from the title EXCEPT for the apostrophe.
If you wish to include dates in a title (Diaries: 1920–1930, for example), you must either:
Use an apostrophe to separate dates (<Diaries 1920 '1930>).
Type the word 'to' between the two dates (<Diaries 1920 to 1930>).
Authors
All spaces are dropped from the author's name (<Van Dyke> becomes VANDYKE, for example).
All punctuation is dropped from the author's name EXCEPT for hyphens and commas (<O'Leary> becomes OLEARY, but <Smith–Roberts> remains SMITH–ROBERTS, for example).
Anywhere in WordStock
Regardless of the abbreviation method used, the following rules apply for ANY entry into WordStock:
