QWITS Installation and Configuration (back to top)

You will need the QWiTS 1.0 floppy diskette.

1. Get to a DOS C:> prompt in Windows 95 (Start menu/Programs/MS-DOS prompt). You will probably initially be in C:>\windows\. Try <cd ..> to get to the "root" (C:>). Type <md qwits>. This creates the QWiTS directory.

2. Go to the qwits directory by typing <CD qwits>. The prompt should now read "C:\qwits\". Insert the qwits diskette in the floppy drive and type <copy a:\*.*>. This copies the contents of the floppy into the QWiTS directory on the hard drive.

3. Next, type <dir> to list the files in the qwits directory. There should be a QWITS16.EXE and a MAN.DOC . As long as you see QWITS16.EXE, your DOS work is done. Type <exit> and press enter to return to Windows 95.

4. You now need to make a "shortcut"- an icon on the Win 95 desktop that when clicked, will initiate a QWiTS session. Click on the icon that is labeled "My Computer". In that window there should be an item or icon indicating the "C:" drive. Click on this. There should be an icon for the QWiTS folder/directory that you recently created. Click on this, and then right-click on the qwits16.exe icon. Go down the menu to "Make Shortcut", and click on that. This will make a "shortcut" icon for QWiTS appear in that window. Drag this icon out of the window and place it on the Win 95 desktop.

5. You now have the QWITS icon on the desktop. Move the pointer to it and press the right mouse button. A menu will come up alongside the icon. Go down to "Properties" and click on that.

6. When the "Properties" window come up, click over to the right tab. Make it read:

C:\qwits\qwits16.exe /s:200.0.0.1 /t:WordStock

Click "OK" or "Apply" to save this.

7. The QWiTS icon is now ready. When the WordStock side of things is ready, simply double-click on it to get a WordStock window. *NOTE* You may rename this icon to be "WordStock" or whatever you want, using standard Windows 95 icon-renaming procedures.

QWiTS via Modem Connection (back to top)

Here are instructions on how to set up QWiTS on a Windows 95 machine to DIALUP OVER THE MODEM and connect to a QNX4.23 or higher WordStock system. This is accomplished by using the "Dial-Up Networking" feature in Windows 95 to establish a PPP/serial link between the two computers.

THINGS TO FIND OUT/DO BEFOREHAND:

1. Verify that the computer is indeed running Windows 95. Windows 95 has a "Start" button in the lower left hand corner of the screen. When you boot up, it shows pretty clouds and says "Windows 95" in big letters. This is important. Windows 3.1 will not work.

2. Verify that there is a modem installed in or on the Windows 95 computer. If you already use your modem to connect to an ISP or an online service, then it should be fine. Installing a modem into your Windows 95 computer is not covered by WordStock.

3. Verify that the "TCP/IP" networking protocol component is installed. This is how to check and see if it is installed:

A. Double-click the icon called "My Computer" on the desktop.

B. Double-click the icon called "Control Panel".

C. Double-click the icon called "Network".

D. A list of the installed network components is displayed:

If you see "TCP/IP" listed there then the component is installed; if it says "Microsoft TCP/IP" that's fine, too. If you don't see either of these, then TCP/IP needs to be installed. It's available on the Windows 95 master CD (or diskettes) and you can refer to your Windows 95 documentation, for instructions on how to install it or contact Microsoft support for installation instructions.

4. Verify that the "Dial-Up Networking" program is installed on the Windows 95 computer. This is how to check and see if it is installed:

1. Double-click the icon called "My Computer" on the desktop.

2. Double-click the icon called "Control Panel".

3. Double-click the icon called "Add/Remove Programs".

4. Click on "Communications".

5. Click the middle tab called "Windows Setup" (at the top).

6. Look at the line called "Dial-Up Networking": if it has a check in the box to the left of it, then it's installed. If it DOES NOT have a check in the box to the left of it, then you need to install it. It's included on the Windows 95 master CD or diskettes; please refer to your Windows 95 documentation or call Microsoft support for instructions on how to install it.

Once you have verified the above, you are ready to install and configure QWiTS for a PPP/Serial Dialup.

ON THE WINDOWS 95 SIDE:

Warning

These instructions assume that both "Dial-Up Networking" and the "TCP/IP Dial-Up Adapter" are both installed on the Windows 95 computer. If you are not sure, please refer to the section entitled "THINGS TO FIND OUT/DO BEFOREHAND" which appears earlier in this help file.

The following items require configuration on the Windows 95 computer:

"TCP/IP" network protocol component;
"Dial-Up Networking" files and properties;
QWiTS icon properties;
WS_FTP icon properties (if installed).

TCP/IP Network Protocol Component Configuration (back to top)

1. Double-click the icon called "My Computer" on the desktop.

2. Double-click the icon called "Control Panel".

3. Double-click the icon called "Network".

4. A list of the installed network components is displayed. Click on the "TCP/IP" line so it is highlighted, then click on "Properties". A properties file will come up. At the top there will be roughly 6 tabs with the names of the different properties; click on "IP Address".

5. Insert the IP address of the Windows 95 machine. The default is (200.0.0.2) on the QNX machine; click "OK".

6. Click on the "DNS Configuration" tab near the top of the window. Click on the "Disable DNS" button and then click "OK".

7. Click "OK" to apply the changes you made to the properties file. You should be prompted to restart the computer. If you wish to continue the configuration process, remember to restart your computer before you attempt to initiate a TCP/IP connection.

Dial-Up Networking Files and Properties Configuration: (back to top)

1. Double-click the icon called "My Computer" on the desktop.
2. There should be a folder in this window called "Dial-Up Networking". Open this folder by double clicking on it.

3. Double-click on the icon called "Make New Connection". You will be prompted to name your connection; We recommend "Dial Storename", or some easily identifiable name. You'll be prompted for modem to use; select the appropriate modem from the list.

4. Click the "Configure" box to check the modem properties. You'll see three tabs at the top of the window. There Should be one labeled "Options". Click on that. Then make sure there's a check in the box to the left of "Bring up terminal window after dialing". Click "OK".

5. You should be back at the "Make New Connection" window; click "Next".

6. Enter the area code, number to dial (modem number of the store) and change the country code if necessary. Click "Next". You will be informed that your connection has been created; click "Finish".
7. Your new "Dial Storename" icon should be there in the "Dial-Up Networking" window. Right-click on it, then go down to "Properties", then click on that.

8. The properties file should have three tabs. The middle tab should be "Server Types"; click on that. Set the options as follows:

Server Type: PPP Win95, WinNT3.5, Internet

Advanced options:

Log onto Network = uncheck
Enable SW compression = check
Req. Encrypted Pwds = uncheck
Protocol to use: TCP/IP only

9. Click on "TCP/IP Settings" and then specify 200.0.0.2 (or whatever IP number you're using); leave the rest. Click on "OK" to save TCP/IP settings.

10. Click on "OK" again to save properties for your "Dial Storename" connection. You may choose to make an alias in order to be able to access the connection right from the Windows 95 Desktop.

Initiating a QWiTS Modem Connection (back to top)

1. On the Windows 95 computer, double-click the "Dial Storename" icon.

2. Wait for the modem to connect. When the modem connects it will bring up a terminal window. You'll be prompted for a terminal type. Type <qnx> and press enter. Log in with <Pstore>. You will get a line of gibberish, which is fine.

3. Press the F7 key (or click the "Continue" button). You should see the message "You are connected to Dial Storename". Click "OK" to continue.

4. You should now double-click on the QWiTS icon. A WordStock terminal window should come up and give you a login. You may now log in with your normal store login. Note: The window doesn't get any bigger.

WS_FTP Installation and Configuration (back to top)

1. Put the WS_FTP diskette in the drive, click the "Start" button and then select "Run". Type in "a:install.exe".

2. Follow the on-screen instructions to select the directory to install to, and to select the name of your preferred local directory for file transfer. You may override this default at any time.

3. Click on "OK" for the next 2 prompts.

4. You will be prompted for your email address. This is not necessary for connection to WordStock. The WS_FTP install program will create a shortcut and a desktop icon.

5. Click on the WS_FTP icon. Click on "General". Put in the profile name you wish. For "Host Name/Address" type "200.0.0.1" or qnx.wordstock.com. For "UserID" click the "Anonymous" box. Click "OK", and once a connection has been established, you may pull files back and forth. Please read your WS_FTP instructions for methods of transfer.
