WordStock Connectivity
  Connecting WordStock to Windows95/98/NT

QWITS on DesktopThis document is an overview of the basics of connecting a WordStock 4 system to Windows 95/98/NT using either a direct Ethernet connection or phone lines and modems.

Connecting a Windows-basedcomputer to a WordStock system enables you to open WordStock "windows" on the Windows computer. Each window that you open is a "virtual terminal" and functions as a WordStock terminal does.

This means that, for example, you can open a "window" to make a WordStock purchase order or to run a WordStock report using the Windows 95/98/NT computer instead of a WordStock workstation. Each WordStock window will appear as an icon on the Windows desktop; just click on the icon and you'll be connected to WordStock.

An Ethernet connection involves installing an Ethernet card in the WordStock computer and the Windows omputer and connecting them, with a length of cable, through an Ethernet traffic-controlling device called a "hub".

With a modem connection, you simply install appropriate software in each computer and then use your Windows modem to "call" your WordStock modem. Then, using TCP/IP and QWITS, a terminal emulation program, you can use your Windows computer(s) as WordStock 4 workstation(s).

Please note that WordStock does not support Windows 95/98/NT: we'll verify the signal between the Ethernet cards, but will bill any additional work Time and Materials.

Two programs that are used frequently to enable computers to exchange information are TCP/IP or Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol, and FTP, or File Transfer Protocol. Both programs are simply sets of rules that tell the computers what to do under different circumstances. TCP/IP is a way of connecting two computers, while FTP is a way of handling data exchange between computers that are already connected and that may be running under different operating systems.

Ethernet is a method of connecting two or more computers to create a network.

TCP/IP
is a communications program used to connect two computers.

QWITS
is a program that enables the Windows95/98/NT computer to function as a WordStock terminal.

WS/FTP
is a program that works with WordStock Export Software to enable you to export files from WordStock to Windows 95/98/NT computer(s).

Ethernet

Pros: 24-hour link with no line charges; very fast file transfer.

Cons: Need to run cables; need some technical experience with Windows 95; hardware costs.

Dial-Up Modem

Pros: PC can be any place that has a phone line; no extra hardware needed.

Cons: Phone charges; transfer speed limited to modem speed; modem will compete with electronic ordering, unless another dedicated line is installed.

Prices quoted are for one connection between one WordStock computer and one Windows 95 computer. Please call WordStock Sales to discuss connecting WordStock 4 to Windows 95/8/NT.
